MATC Golf Finishes in Second Place
Posted 10-12-09 - The WolfPack came up just short of qualifying for the NJCAA Division III National Championship as a team. MATC kept it close with Rock Valley College for the entire tournament, but the Golden Eagles pulled away on the final nine holes to finish ahead of MATC. Rock Valley College finished with a score of 935 and MATC finished with a score of 948.
Individually, Andrew Steinhofer finished in first place with a three day score of 227 (72-76-79). Steinhofer will compete as an individual at the NJCAA Division III National Championship in Chautauqua, NY for his first-place finish. The national championship competition runs from June 7-11, 2010.
Evan Wartgow made an impressive shot when he hit a hole-in-one on the 17th hole in the final round of the tournament on the Prairie View Golf Course.

MATC Golf Stays Close after 36 Holes
Posted 10-12-09 - The MATC Golf team fell seven strokes off the lead on the second day at the Prairie View Golf Course. The WolfPack compiled a score of 626 after playing 36 holes in Byron, IL. Rock Valley College ended the day ahead of the WolfPack with a score of 619. The final round of the NJCAA Region IV Tournament will take place on Oct. 10.
Andrew Steinhofer continued to lead the way for the WolfPack and the entire field by shooting a 148 after two rounds of play. Brian O'Connell stayed in third with a two-day score of 154. Evan Wartgow and Mitch Kowaleski each shot an 80 on the second day of the tournament to improve their first-round scores by five strokes and 12 strokes respectively.

MATC Golf All Tied Up After Day One
Posted 10-09-09 - The WolfPack found themselves tied for first with Rock Valley College after day one of three at the NJCAA Region IV Tournament. MATC and Rock Valley College are currently sitting on a score of 311 and College of DuPage is just three strokes off the lead with a score of 314. Milwaukee Area Technical College has dug themselves into a hole after shooting a 369 in the first round of the tournament.
The rain-soaked Prairie View Golf Course in Byron, IL proved to be no easy task for the golfers on Oct. 8. Andrew Steinhofer is currently the individual leader of the tournament with his score of 72. He is the only player in the tournament to be shooting par through one round of play. Brian O'Connell's knee appears to be feeling better as he is currently shooting a 75, which is good for the third-best score through one round.

MATC Golf Wraps up Regular Season
Posted 10-05-09 - The MATC Golf team wrapped up the regular season by placing third in the College of DuPage Tournament. On Oct. 3 at the Cantigny Golf Course in Wheaton, IL, the WolfPack shot a 320 and only finished ahead of MATC-Milwaukee. The WolfPack finished with their worst team score for 18 holes since their first invite of the year.
Andrew Steinhofer (77) placed fourth individually at the tournament. The MATC Golf team will tee off the post-season on Oct. 8 at the Prairie View Golf Course in Byron, IL.

WolfPack Golf Place Second at Prairie View
Posted 10-05-09 - The MATC Golf team took second place at the Prairie View Classic in Byron, IL on Oct. 2. The WolfPack shot a score of 311, just two shots behind the winning team, Sauk Valley College. The WolfPack finished ahead of all three North Central Community College (N4C) foes at the classic.
The second-place finish in Byron, IL was encouraging as the WolfPack look toward the post-season. The MATC Golf team will return to the Prairie View Golf Course for the NJCAA Region IV Tournament on Oct. 8-10.
Individually, Brian O'Connell (75) and Andrew Steinhofer (76) took third and fifth place respectively.

Second Place Finish at WolfPack Invitational
Posted 9-24-09 - The WolfPack finished five shots behind the Rock Valley "A" team at The Bridges Golf Course on September 23 in Madison. MATC shot a 310 for the day and finished second in the eight team field. They have finished second place four times in six invites this season.
Andrew Steinhofer lead the way for the WolfPack shooting a 71. He won individual medalist honors for his second place finish. He was only one of two players in the entire field to finish under par. Teammate Evan Wartgow finished four shots behind Steinhofer to finish fifth at the invite with a 75.

MATC Places Second at Illinois Valley Classic
Posted 9-21-09 - MATC played well both days to finish second with a 36-hole team total of 611 in LaSalle, IL. The invite included conference foes Rock Valley College and College of DuPage in the 17 team field.
Andrew Steinhofer finished second at the invite. He shot a 70 on the first 18-holes, which was good enough for the second-best round at the invite. He finished with a 142 over the two rounds. Evan Wartgow took 5th place as he rebounded on the second day to shoot a 71. He finished with a score of 148 for the 36 holes.

MATC Places Second at Edgewood Fall Classic
Posted 9-6-09 - MATC used a great second day to finish second with a 36-hole team total of 610 in a highly competitive field at the Edgewood College Fall Classic on Septmber 4-5.
First year MATC golfer, Andrew Steinhofer moved up from sixth place after a first round score of 73 to claim individual medalist honors with a second round two under par, 70. While Andrew Steinhofer placed first with a 143, teammate Evan Wartgow finished in fourth with a 36 hole total of 149. Cody Smith and Brian O'Connell each finished tied for 33rd with 36-hole totals of 159.
MATC Places Second at Rock Valley Invite
Posted 9-1-09 - On Saturday, August 29, MATC taveled to Rockford, IL to play in the Rock Valley Invitational. The WolfPack finished second out of four teams with a score of 316.
Brian O'Connell won the invitational with a 18-hole score of 73.

WolfPack Finish Eighth in First Invite
Posted 9-1-09 - The MATC Golf Team finished in eighth place, out of twenty teams at the annual Highland "36" Invitational at the Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport, IL. Brian O'Connell led the way for the WolfPack shooting a 36-hole score of 156 (77-79) and finishing sixth while teammate Evan Wartgow posted a 163 (82-81) to place 24th.

MATC Golf Coach, Jim Thomas, Dies at 43
Posted 8-19-09 - The Madison Area Technical College (MATC) golf coach and head pro at the Bridges Golf Course, Jim Thomas died on August 18 at the age of 43.
Jim coached at MATC for eight years leading the WolfPack golf team to unprecedented success. His teams won seven straight Wisconsin Technical College Conference (WTCC) titles, eight consecutive Wisconsin Junior College Athletic Association (WJCAA) titles, three National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIII titles, and finished second in the nation in both 2003 and 2004. Thomas won NJCAA Region XIII Coach-of-the-Year honors three times and WJCAA Coach-of-the-Year honors eight times.
"We lost a great friend and member of our MATC Athletics family yesterday. I cannot express how saddened we are about Jim's death," commented Director of Athletics, Steve Hauser. "Coach Thomas was a wonderful coach and mentor to the student-athletes that he worked with. We will miss him a great deal. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Susie, the kids and Jim's entire extended family."

Service
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 7450 University Avenue, in Middleton at 1 PM Saturday. Visitation will be at 10 AM until the time of the service.

Future MATC Golfer, Steinofer Claims Title
Posted 6-29-09 - Over the weekend, future MATC Golfer and former Madison La Follete standout, Andrew Steinhofer won the Ray Fischer Amateur Championship at the Riverside Golf Course in Janesville, WI.
Steinofer birdied the final two holes to shoot a final round 3-under-par 69 to win by one-stroke. His tournament score of 12-under 276 bested the field that included Dallas Cowboy quarterback, Tony Romo, a Burlington, WI native.

Open Tryouts - Mandatory Meeting Date Set
Posted 6-23-09 - MATC Golf team has scheduled their Mandatory Meeting for Tuesday, August 11 at 9:00 AM at the Bridges Golf Course. This meeting is required for all students interested in trying out for the team, recruited athletes and for all athletes returning for their second season of competition.
